The Iceland Dance Company (ID) makes the final stop of its first U.S. tour this Saturday, November 10, at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts.
The company will perform Peter Anderson's Critic’s choice? (2005), Olof Ingolfsdottir's Man is always alon” (1999) and Stijn Celis Practice Paradise (2004).
Over the last decade, ID has concentrated exclusively on modern and contemporary repertoire, commissioning choreographers from Iceland and other European nations. The company initially immersed itself in musical theater, modern dance and classical ballet productions with children. "I gave the company a focus," artistic director Katrin Hall told Newsday. "I changed it into a contemporary-dance company."
The 12-member group was founded in 1973 by the National Theatre of Iceland. Such choreographers as Rui Horta, Jirí Kylián, Jo Stromgren, Jochen Ulrich, Richard Wherlock, Itzik Galili and Jorma Uotinen have created works for them. "Good foreign choreographers are vital, since we are so isolated," said Hall, who calls augmenting ID's Icelandic repertoire her "vision."
ID's U.S. tour began last month in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with subsequent stops in New Jersey and New Hampshire. They perform tonight at the American Theatre in Hampton, Virginia, and at SUNY Stony Brook on November 9.
This Saturday's performance is part of Brooklyn Center's World of Dance series, whose current season features the Moiseyev Dance Company, Richmond Ballet, Ballet Folklórico de México, Ballet Argentino and the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica.
